Manuscript Writing (9/22) and Project Management (10/21)

The goal of the series is to provide Brain Institute trainees an opportunity to engage in professional development, network and become active participants of the Brain Institute Community.

All Brain Institute postdocs and graduate students are invited to attend.

 

Manuscript Writing Fall2025

Manuscript Writing Bootcamp

September 22, 10am–5pm

10am–1pm: High-Impact Science Writing
Susan Marriott, Founder & CEO of BioScience Writers, will walk through the fundamentals of identifying and understanding your audience, choosing the best word to use for specific situations, and structuring your sentences and paragraphs in an engaging way.

You will learn fundamental tools and thought processes that will help you highlight the most important parts of your work and increase the impact and visibility of your science. 

2–5pm: How to Write a Science Manuscript
This workshop will guide you through the full process of writing a scientific manuscript, from writing and editing your first draft all the way to manuscript submission and reviewer responses. Learn how to carefully consider and optimize the content, organization, presentation, and flow of your scientific manuscripts so that you can present your science in the best possible light.


ProjectManagement Fall2025

Project Management for Scientists Bootcamp

October 21, 10am–5pm

10am–1pm: The Scrum for Scientists: Create Your Own Scrum System
Shayla Vradenburgh, Founder and CEO of Revolting Science Resources, will lead this session. Participants will learn the fundamentals of Scrum, create a customized Scrum system for individual or lab-wide use, and gain practical experience in setting up Sprint schedules, digital repositories, and a Sprint backlog. 

This session is perfect for those looking to bring structure to their work and improve efficiency, regardless of whether they stay in academia or move into industry. 

2–5pm: The Project Plan for Academic Research
Participants will learn the essential components of a project plan, develop their own Project Plan, and integrate it into a task and time management system. This session provides practical strategies to set clear goals, manage research milestones, and improve collaboration.
