Call for Applications: Co-Director, UVA Brain Institute

The UVA Brain Institute invites applications for the position of Co-Director, to serve alongside current director Jaideep Kapur. This leadership position reports jointly to the Executive Vice President & Provost and the Vice President for Research. The Co-Director will help guide and grow the Institute’s research portfolio, infrastructure, training programs, and strategic partnerships.

Position Overview

We seek a distinguished UVA brain science researcher at the Associate or Full Professor level with an active, federally funded research program. It is open to current and incoming faculty in any discipline.  The successful candidate will bring visionary leadership to the Institute, foster interdisciplinary collaboration, and engage both internal and external stakeholders to expand the Institute’s national impact. 

This high-profile, forward-facing role demands deep expertise in brain science, strong leadership, and a commitment to innovation, collaboration, and training. It offers a unique opportunity to connect disciplines, advance discovery from bench to bedside to population health, and shape the next generation of neuroscience leaders.


Key Responsibilities

Strategic Leadership

  • Co-develop and implement a multi-year strategic plan aligned with UVA’s mission.
  • Identify and pursue new opportunities in brain science research.
  • Represent the Brain Institute to internal and external stakeholders, including funding agencies, academic partners, and the public.

Research Development

  • Develop and oversee basic, translational, and clinical research initiatives.
  • Promote collaboration across departments, schools, and disciplines.
  • Foster scientific excellence through evaluation, mentorship, and innovation.

Financial & Operational Oversight

  • Manage Institute resources, budgets, and strategic investments.
  • Pursue diverse external funding streams (grants, philanthropy, industry).
  • Ensure compliance with institutional and sponsor policies.

Talent & Team Management

  • Recruit and support a strong team.
  • Promote mentorship, professional development, and a collaborative culture.
  • Recognize and support contributions of faculty, staff, and trainees.

Public Engagement & Advocacy

  • Lead public education, outreach, and community engagement efforts.
  • Build partnerships with advocacy groups, healthcare providers, and nonprofit organizations.
  • Communicate the Institute’s impact and research achievements.

Qualifications

Education

  • Ph.D., M.D., or equivalent terminal degree in a relevant discipline.

Experience

  • Strong record of federally funded brain-related research.
  • Leadership experience in academic or research institutions.
  • Demonstrated success in building interdisciplinary teams and securing funding.

Note: While tenure-track faculty are preferred, exceptional research faculty or clinician scientists with appropriate qualifications may be considered.
