Summer Research Internship Program for UVA Wise Students

In partnership with the UVA School of Medicine and UVA Wise, we are pleased to announce a new opportunity for current UVA Wise students interested in neuroscience research. 

The Summer Research Internship Program (SRIP) for UVA Wise students is ten-week research internship open to current UVA Wise undergraduates (including Year in Wise students) considering a career in biomedical neuroscience research. Generous financial support, summer housing, and travel to/from Charlottesville are provided to participants.

SRIP Offers:

  • An immersive, ten-week, hands-on research experience investigating current problems in biomedical research under the guidance of a faculty member.
  • A professional development series highlighting the opportunities that exist for careers in biomedical sciences.
    Presentations by our faculty and panel discussions from our graduate students about the graduate school application process.
  • A research lecture series presented by internationally recognized scientists & physician scientists.
  • “Communicating Science” workshops teaching strategies for communicating complex scientific topics in clear and engaging ways.
  • Several opportunities to present your research.
  • Regular office hours and mentoring with the SRIP Program Director.
  • Housing on UVA Grounds, within easy walking distance to the research facilities and the Health System.
  • Roundtrip travel to Charlottesville. Fly to and from Charlottesville or be reimbursed for driving mileage.
  • Access to the UVA athletic facilities for a nominal fee.
  • Generous financial support through a stipend or wage.
  • Social activities and a closing reception.
  • Catered events.

To be eligible for consideration for SRIP, an applicant must:

  • Be a current 1st, 2nd, or 3rd year undergraduate at the University of Virginia's College at Wise (UVA Wise)
  • Be a U.S. citizen or hold a permanent resident visa
  • Submit an online application and supporting materials by the March 6th application deadline

Please ensure that the University of Virginia's College at Wise or UVA Wise is listed as your current institution. 

Upload your most recent unofficial transcript. If coursework has been completed at several institutions and your recent transcript doesn’t reflect the grades from all courses at all schools, you must submit transcripts from each institution attended.

Under Research Interests, please include "Neuroscience" as one of your choices. 

Under Faculty Interest, please use the Biomedical Sciences Faculty list and Brain Institute Faculty Directory to help identify UVA faculty members with whom you're interested in working for the summer. Upon admission to SRIP, administrators will help match participants with UVA faculty members.

Personal Statements:
1. Career Goals & Past Experiences (500 words maximum): 
Please explain your educational aspirations and why you want to participate in SRIP. Please try to address the following:

  • What are your academic and/or career goals and how has your background, perspective or life experiences influenced these goals?
  • How will your participation in SRIP help you towards these goals?

2. Statement of Research Interest (500 words maximum)
Please describe your research experiences and areas of biomedical research that you would be interested in pursuing this summer.  Please try to address the following:

  • If you have had previous biomedical research experience, this is an opportunity to describe that experience and how it has influenced your current interests.
  • Describe the research you would like to explore and why this research appeals to you.
  • Explain how your interests overlap with the faculty mentors you identified earlier in the application. 

3. Other Relevant Information (Optional – 125 words maximum)
Please share any additional relevant information or experience that you would like us to know about (volunteer, academic, life or work experiences).

Recommendations:

Two letters are required, but up to four may be submitted. Try to choose individuals whom know you well and can comment on your aptitude for research and academic abilities. Our application system emails your recommenders with a request to complete our evaluation form and provide a letter. Please complete the "Add Recommender" form for each individual well in advance of March 6th deadline, so recommenders can complete the form by March 6, 2026.
